8 Things to Let Go of to Live a Happier Life!

Life is like a box of choc… No wait, that’s not what I was going to say. Chocolates are bad for you, so skip that whole thing. Let’s try this again: Life is like your breath; if you hold on to things too long, it can hurt you more than help you.

While there are plenty of important life skills that require you to remember things, focus on them and keep them fresh in mind, there are as many items you might just want to drop like a rock off a bridge if you know what’s good for you.

Take a look and see if any of these sound familiar and, if so, you might want to try kicking them to the curb to live a happier life.

1. Insecurity

 Happy people believe in themselves and refuse to let doubt creep into their thoughts. Not many things will paralyze success and happiness more than insecurity. Replacing insecurity with optimism is a sure fire way to chase the blues away.

2. Needing control

 Maybe I should have said, “Needing the façade of control” since the reality is, you don’t really control much of anything in this life. Think of life as more of a rollercoaster instead of a car.

You don’t dictate where it’s going, how fast it flies by or how big the hills and valleys are going to be. You’re just along for the ride my friend, so you might as well get over that whole control thing and put your hands up and have some fun.

3. Anger

 Don’t get me wrong here, you absolutely need to experience anger when something or someone does you wrong. Get mad, stomp your feet, grit your teeth a little and then get over it.

Anger is a viable emotion, in small, controlled bursts, but if it is allowed to fester and stick around too long, it makes life unbearable for you and everyone around you.

Feel it and move on and get back to enjoying your roller coaster!

4. A Negative Body Image.

 If you look hard enough, everyone has room for improvement on their body. On the other hand, CHOOSE to look at it this way:

Your body is the most amazing and beautiful thing in all of the world. It is so fantastically complex and intricate in detail, each and every one of us is a masterpiece work of art.

Choose your point of view carefully and appreciate your body and I bet things will start feeling a lot better right away,

5. Pride

 Too much of this one will drag you down a dark path to misery. While self-esteem is important, having too much pride (read here: stubbornness) ends up only with tragedy. Think of excessive pride like drinking poison and hoping someone else dies from it. Let it go!

6. Excuses

 Do I really need to explain this one? Suck it up and quit pointing the finger at anyone other than yourself. Take full responsibility for where you are in life and if you’re not happy with your place, do something about it! More actions. Fewer words.

7. Jealousy

 There is a reason one of the 10 Commandments mentions not coveting other people’s stuff.

Trust me on this, the grass that seems greener over there is photoshopped. Focus on your bounty instead of worrying what is going on with others. They are most likely checking your stuff out anyway, so you might want to invest in an alarm system.

8. Expectations

 Look, we all have expectations about pretty much every situation we walk into every single day. The problem is, by having preconceived notions of how things should turn out, we set ourselves (and others) up for failure from the get-go.

Let the cards fall where they may and then deal with the situation as it has unfolded. Unless you have a time machine that I don’t know about, thinking you know what SHOULD happen next, is a big waste of time and energy.

I’ll leave you with one final metaphor as to why you should let these things go in life to achieve greater happiness:

Think of all of the drama these items cause you as if it were that Mexican food you ate after the bar at 2 a.m. last night. At first all is well, but soon a rumbling in your lower intestines tells you it’s time to release the things that have built up.
