The alarm goes off at 6 am for the dreaded wake-up call, but you feel like crap and the room is spinning. How are you going to make it through the day, much less make it out of your apartment without upchucking the night’s fun all over the floor?
My friend, you are suffering from the classic hangover. Even though it is tempting, don’t reach for greasy, fatty foods to help cure your hangover, because it will only make you feel worse! Instead, there are some healthy food choices that you can reach to navigate a healthy recovery. We will break down these hangover cures for you in the following paragraphs.
Fruit is Your Friend
Fruit is a great hangover cure because the natural sugars will help boost your lagging energy and the vitamins and minerals will help replace the good nutrients that the alcohol is trying to flush out of your system. Bananas are especially good because they will help elevate your potassium levels (which you lost if you unfortunately visited the porcelain goddess) and it will be gentle on your sensitive stomach.
Stay On the Sunny Side Up
If you can stand the smell of them– eggs, particularly the whites, are a great go to food to help with hangovers. Eggs are filled with an amino acid called cysteine that helps soak up the toxins of the alcohol, helping you feel better faster.
Skip Your Cup O’ Joe
Reach for the green tea or coconut water instead of coffee. Coffee may have the caffeine buzz you are looing for, but it is short-term. Coffee can dehydrate you, which will make your hangover worse. Coconut water is great for hangovers because it is filled with electrolytes, so it will help you replenish and hydrate faster than regular water and doesn’t have the artificial sugar that sports drinks do. Coconut water is also a diuretic, so it will help you pee out the alcohol faster, speeding up your hangover recovery. Green tea is hydrating as well and has the caffeine you are craving. The two together are a perfect sobering combo.
So there you go. Next time you have a few too many, reach for one of these hangover cures the next morning.
