Once upon a time, marijuana was touted as a treatment for glaucoma. It was also said to stimulate appetite in chemo patients. In recent years, the controversial medical marijuana is being overshadowed by CBD oil which claims to help everything from arthritis to ADHD. Is it miracle oil or snake oil? How can it benefit people over 50? Here are some relevant facts about CBD oil:
1. It Won’t Make You High.
CBD oils and products do not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the primary agent responsible for the “high” associated with recreational marijuana use. While both marijuana and CBD are sourced from cannabis, the types of plants from which they’re harvested vary. Hemp plants are grown for fiber and seed oil, and “drug” plants include both THC-rich plants and non-euphoric CBD-rich plants.
2. It Does Help Glaucoma
Marijuana has long been described as helpful in treating glaucoma—even though the disease has no cure at present. The problem with that is the effects are short lived and to see continued results patients basically needed to consume every more few hours. While going through much of the day high might seem enjoyable to some it’s not practical for most. Research now shows that CBD may be just as useful without the intoxicating side effects.
3. It Can Soothe Arthritis Pain
Studies show that CBD oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce joint-related pain associated with arthritis. In a 2016 study, a gel containing cannibidiol reduced joint pain and inflammation in rats with no side effects. CBD oil shows similar promise in treating the autoimmune condition Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
4. It Helps Fight Bone Loss
More than 10 million Americans aged 50+ are affected by osteoporosis and another 43 million have low bone mass. According to a study by the National Osteoporosis Foundation that number could increase to more than 71 million in the next 10 years and so far no real viable treatment is available. Enter CBD. Humans have cannabinoid receptors in their bone cells, and by introducing CBD you are actually helping your body prevent bone loss and keep osteoporosis at bay. For those already suffering from bone loss, CBD could help prevent future bone loss and maybe even assist the body in building stronger bones.
5. It’s Even Good for Your Four-Legged Companions
Since all mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), even your furry friends can benefit from CBD oil. Shampoos, treats, and CBD sprays can soothe many issues including skin irritation, inflammation, arthritis, anxiety and hyperactivity.
