Let’s start this article off with a little dose of reality:
Most Americans rely on the government to tell them how they should live.
I know, you probably just got offended that I would dare to make such a claim. You would NEVER let anyone tell you how to live your life, right? Do me a favor and hang in there for a couple more paragraphs so I can explain my outlandish claim a little more thoroughly and hopefully put a smile back on your face.
Way back in the 1960’s, the United States Department of Agriculture and the American Heart Association became heavily influenced by Ancel Keys and his so called “Seven Countries Study.” The study attempted to illustrate the relationship between saturated fat and cholesterol consumption in the diet and cardiovascular disease.
In 1961, Dr. Keys sealed the fate of both saturated fat and cholesterol by landing a position on the nutrition committee of the American Heart Association, whose dietary guidelines are considered the gold standard. Although the committee had originally been skeptical of his hypothesis, it issued, in that year, the country’s first-ever guidelines targeting cholesterol and saturated fats. The U.S. Department of Agriculture followed in 1980.
What does this have to do with you (No, not YOU, I meant somebody else) being a zombie slave to the government?
After the AHA advised the public to eat less saturated fat and cholesterol and switch to vegetable oils for a “healthy heart” in 1961, Americans changed their diets. Now vegetable oils represent 7% to 8% of all calories in our diet, up from nearly zero in 1900, the biggest increase in consumption of any type of food over the past century. The AHA and the USDA spoke, and the American population listened and followed directions because, after all, the government couldn’t be wrong about things like our health, right?
Fast forward to December 15, 2014 and the influential Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has recommended that limitations on dietary cholesterol be removed from the upcoming 2015 edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Apparently seeing the U.S. population grow sicker and fatter while adhering to their own official dietary guidelines has put nutrition authorities in such an awkward position that they had to go back and re-check the facts. We have been blaming cholesterol for the rampant increase in heart disease these last 50 years and cutting it out of our diets when in fact dietary cholesterol has NO impact on the onset or progression of cardiovascular disease. Oops!
Let me translate that into plain english: It’s now ok for you to drink whole milk, eat whole eggs (yes, that includes the yummy yolk!) and bacon again without feeling guilty.
If that doesn’t put a smile back onto your face, I don’t know what will! No longer do my fellow Americans have to hide their faces under a baseball cap they pulled down extra low every time they eat a Grand Slam at IHOP. The incredible, edible egg is on the “Good List” again, kind of like I talked about in this article a little while back.
I know each and every one of the people in America likes to believe they are their own person and they do as they see fit, but the truth is MOST of us want to blend in with the masses and not rock the boat. If everyone else was cutting back on how many egg yolks they ate, well, who am I to walk against traffic? It is pretty normal to just go with the flow and that is just what the average American has done all this time. Thankfully with new information, the AHA and USDA are changing their tune on what is and what isn’t “good for us.”
Now all you have to worry about is do you like those eggs over medium or sunny side up?
