Free + Vegan = Freegan. But it’s far more than that. Freegan’s live in a brave new world that dispels common consumer practices and seeks to reduce waste. You might find a Freegan dumpster diving on a regular basis, but not because they are without the means to buy food for themselves, they simply don’t. Many live off of the waste to prove an environmental, anarchist, or anti-capital agenda.
Other common Freegan practices:
– Plate scraping
– Wild foraging
– Reusing goods
– Conserving water
– Solar energy
The practice is not unhealthy, unless you are doing something illegal (which has been a common issue among Freegans). To many, however, Freeganism can be considered to be a very liberating practice that naturally delivers a healthier lifestyle. By nature, Freegans are vegan because they do not support commercial farming or anything that may be considered wasteful. Their general philosophy was outlined in a manifesto like pamphlet, written by, Warren Oaks in 1999, called “Why Freegan”:
Freegans “embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed.”
So, if you are feeling bogged down by some of these commonly perceived negatives of the mass public. Perhaps it is time to set yourself Freegan?
