There’s no suga-coating this one.
Most vegan protein powders taste like absolute shit.
I dare to say that they can even be compared to eating straight up dirt.
Despite reading dozens of glowing reviews online, it took me a while to find one that actually tasted good.
I still remember trying to take down my first one.
The texture, taste, aftertaste and overall look of it had me wanting to puke within the first two sips. When I went to return the first one I bought, the sales lady warned me that I probably wouldn’t like the taste of any of them.
By my third try, I was starting to think she was on to something.
The problem was, the “normal” protein shakes have added hormones and un-pronounceable ingredients that make them totally unappealing.
THE GOOD NEWS
I’ve found one that tastes pretty good, fills me up, is plant-based and pretty decent in price: Sunwarrior Warrior Blend.
I’ve tried both the vanilla and the chocolate flavors but personally prefer the chocolate one. It doesn’t taste anything like the chocolate that we are used to, so don’t expect it to be mouth-watering.
With Vegan protein shakes, it’s all about how you prepare it. Unlike most proteins, you can’t just mix the powder with water and throw it in your fancy shaker cup. You actually have to mix it in the blender for the best results.
Although, if you’re strapped for time, the Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Protein can be mixed with some Almond milk in a shaker, but don’t expect it to taste insanely good or even enjoyable.
Instead, take out your blender, wipe the dust off of it and start mixing.
For my blended shakes, I use a base of water and add whatever fruit I have in the house. I also like to throw in spinach or half an avocado for an extra boost of goodness.
Lastly, I throw in some Chia Seeds.
If I’m jonesing for a dessert-type smoothie, I’ll add some almond butter.
No matter which fruit combination you choose, the result is a tasty, meat-free fruit smoothie.
No dirt taste here, folks!
What do you like to add to your protein smoothies?
