Admit it, sometimes the only thing that can get you through a long week (or even day) is knowing there’s a glass of wine, cold beer or fruity cocktail waiting at the end of it. Whether it’s a relaxing nightcap or social beerfest, everyone likes to have a drink (at least) every now and then.
What don’t we like? All the added calories in one little drink.
I know what you’re thinking, how much can one night out sabotage your healthy diet? Turns out, it could be a lot and I’m not even including the cheese fries and mac and cheese you pig out on a 2 a.m. after the bars.
The reason alcohol can kill your diet is because your body doesn’t store alcoholic calories the same way as food calories, Dr. Pamela M. Peek explains in her book “The Hunger Fix”. In fact, your body wants to get rid of the booze calories so quickly that it stops burning fat from that super healthy egg white and spinach breakfast burrito to get rid of the three beers you just downed.
You don’t have to give up drinking to avoid all the unnecessary weight gain. Just drink smart (and safely, of course!)

Club soda is the best mixer because it’s calorie free. You might think that apple, cranberry or grape juice is better, but the natural sugars and calories add up to what you’d find in a soda. Throw a lime or lemon in your mixed drink to add some flavor and sip on this low-calorie beverage all night!
Light beer is basically beer without the beer belly—imagine that. Most top beer brands have a light beer in the market that averages around 100 calories per bottle or can. Host your own light beer tasting to find your favorite—your waistline will thank you later.
Good news, wine is not off the table. You can all breathe a sigh of relief. Just make sure you choose dry wine not sweet wine. Sweet wines can contain over 100 calories more than dry wines per serving.
I’m not suggesting you take 10 shots and call it day because that’s the most calorie-friendly drink. If you can stomach the minimal mixer drink, you only have to worry about the calories in the actual alcohol. Straight alcohol might sound intense, but throw some club soda and a lime and this drink will keep you on track.

These tropical, fruity drinks pack an entire meal’s worth of calories into one glass. Yes, 500-700 calories are hidden in these frozen cocktails. Sadly, skip these and save them for your vacation to Aruba.
Long Island Iced Teas
LITs were my go-to in college. Unfortunately, the 700 calorie drink explains a good amount of my weight gain. This alcohol packed drink (rum, vodka, gin AND tequila) should be left at the bar… back in college.
I know, how do you celebrate Taco Tuesday without margaritas? Margaritas aren’t unlike any other cocktail on the list: super sweet, calorie-packed and temptingly delicious.
Sangria & Cocktails
Sex and the City may have made it look sexy and fun, but here is nothing fun about the extra calories in their sugary cosmos. Cocktails and sangria include an abundance of sugar. The fresh fruit may trick you into thinking there’s nutrition hidden in these drinks, but there’s not. Just put the glass down and walk away.
Stay away from dense beers. I know, this might make beerfest difficult, but you’ll survive.
